    • Death toll in Uttarakhand touches 113; expected to rise 'manifold'
Death toll in Uttarakhand touches 113; expected to rise 'manifold' Dehradun :  At least 1113 people  have died in the flash floods triggered by incessant rains in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, while the toll in the calamity is likely to rise manifold as 500 people are still reported to be missing.  The famous Kedarnath shrine has been submerged under mud and slush and there is widespread devastation  near the temple.

Kukhimath SDM Rakesh Tewari told reporters after his return from Himalayan shrine of Kedarnarth that 50 bodies are lying in areas adjacent to the shine.

“We are right now concentrating on rescuing those who are alive,” the officer said.

Some of the pilgrims who returned from the shrine after being stranded there for two days said that Kedarnathpuri has been totally damaged by the flood.

Barring the Kedarnath shrine and some of the structures adjoining it, most of the residential rings of the temple are damaged.

Bodies of pilgrims are lying in debris of damaged houses, the pilgrims said.

The  Kedarnath shrine, one of the four holy dhams, in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand bore the brunt of torrential rains. About 500 people, including several pilgrims, are said to be missing in the area.

More than 70,000 pilgrims are stranded on the Char Dham route.

The death toll may rise significantly once water recedes and relief teams are able to access the affected areas. A portion of the Kedarnath temple compound was washed away but authorities said no damages were reported to the structure itself.

The Ram Bada area, a busy spot near the temple, has been completely submerged and was not visible from rescue choppers. Army Central Command officials said that nearly 6,000 to 8,000 people are stranded in Kedarnath, 2,500 in Hemkund Sahib and around 8,000 in Badrinath.

Flash floods, cloudbursts and landslips have so far claimed 131 lives in northern India. Thousands have been displaced in Uttar Pradesh where several rivers are in spate.

The death toll in Uttarakhand has reached 102. Rudraprayag district was the worst hit with 20 people dead and 73 buildings, including 40 hotels, along the banks of the Alaknanda swept away in the swirling waters of the river.

A total of 71,440 pilgrims bound for the Himalayan shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri are stranded in Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts of Uttarakhand with the famous char dham yatra having been suspended due to massive landslides and damage to the road network.

“More persons are feared dead at Tejam in Pithoragarh district,” Chief Secretary Subahash Kumar told reporters here this evening.

About 500 pilgrims stranded at Kedarnath were ferried to safety at Guptkashi today as rescue operations picked up momentum two days after incessant rains wreaked havoc in the hill state, he said.

However, he expressed inability to give a precise figure of casualties in Pithoragarh saying choppers cannot be landed at many places due to heavy flooding.

He said the possibility of casualties “rising manifold” cannot be ruled out as many places with crowded settlements in the worst hit Rudraprayag district are heavily inundated, so much that they cannot even be seen from the choppers that were flown over them to take stock of the situation.

Massive casualties are feared at the thickly populated Rambara in the district where nothing is visible from above,Garhwal Commissioner Subardhan who was also present at the joint press conference said.

    • Yamuna flowing 1.57 metre above danger level in Delhi, thousands evacuated
Yamuna flowing 1.57 metre above danger level in Delhi, thousands evacuated New Delhi, Jun 19: The river Yamuna was flowing at 206.4 metres on Wednesday morning, a good 1.57 metre above danger level (204.83 m).

Thousands  of people living on the banks of the river have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

The water level is  set to go up significantly with Haryana releasing over nine lakh cusecs of water into the river in the last two days.

Authorities have evacuated around 1,500 people from various low-lying areas in east Delhi like Usmanpur, Yamuna Bazar, Bhajanpura and Shastri Park and set up relief camps for their shelter.

Oofficials in the Flood Control and Irrigation department said,  the water level would touch 207.05 meter around noon tomorrow as 9.5 lakh cusecs of water released by Haryana in the last two days is expected to reach Delhi.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the situation was under control and there was no need to panic as the administration was prepared to face any eventuality.

The Old Yamuna Bridge, connecting east Delhi with the heart of the national capital, was shut for rail and road traffic early Tuesday morning after the water level in Yamuna rose dangerously.

Haryana had released eight lakh cusecs of excess water into Yamuna from the Hathnikund barrage near Yamunanagar yesterday while it released over 1.5 lakh cusecs today.

The closure of the Old Yamuna bridge resulted in diversion of traffic in East Delhi, resulting in choking of various arterial roads in the area.

"The situation is under control. There is no need to panic. The concerned departments and agencies are taking all precautionary measures to deal with any eventuality," Dikshit said.

The Chief Minister said she has been keeping a close watch on the flood situation and the level of the water in Yamuna apart from keeping in touch with all agencies concerned to ensure the safety of people.

Officials in the Flood and Irrigation department said they have completed evacuation of the people from low-lying areas.

Officials said the army has been asked to be on alert for helping the civil administration, if required.

They said over 400 tents have been put up in four districts – 240 in East district, 100 in South East district, 50 in Central district and 30 in North East district to accommodate the affected people.

Sixty two boats with divers have also been pressed into service to rescue the people.

One Junior Commissioned Officer of the army has been deployed in the flood control room in East Delhi for proper coordination between the army and the civil administration in relief and rescue operation.

Chief Secretary D M Spolia has directed Sub Divisional Magistrates of affected districts to initiate joint patrolling with police in vulnerable areas to ensure that nobody is left in the flood-prone areas.

The 'Disaster Control Room' in the office of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority has started monitoring the situation and disseminating information regarding the water level in Yamuna through SMS alerts to all key functionaries, said the officials.

Mobile medical teams and water tanks have also been pressed into service to help the affected people.

      In the last 40 years, the city had witnessed floods in 1967, 1971, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1988, 1995 and 1998.

    • Ahead of vote, Nitish confident of proving majority
Ahead of vote, Nitish confident of proving majority Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is confident of proving his majority in the assembly Wednesday after dumping the BJP as an ally, party leaders said Tuesday.

Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leaders said Nitish Kumar was "calm and cool" and spent the day in office Tuesday, not worried about the trust vote in the 243-seat legislature.

Soon after the JD-U ended its 17-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party Sunday, the chief minister vowed to seek a vote of confidence at a special session of the state assembly Wednesday.

"Nitish Kumar was busy as usual in office work. He was not at all tense," an official in the chief minister's office said.

Nitish Kumar called off the alliance with the BJP and his colleague Sharad Yadav quit as the convenor of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) following differences with the BJP over the growing clout of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

JD-U spokesperson Neeraj Kumar told IANS that Wednesday's trust vote would be smooth sailing for Nitish Kumar.

The JD-U is four short of majority but is confident of bagging the adequate numbers despite opposition from friend-turned-foe BJP and Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

The ruling party is primarily banking on the six independents.

"After four of the six independent legislators announced their support to Nitish Kumar, the sole LJP legislator, Zakir Hussain Khan, has also announced his support to the government," Neeraj Kumar said.

"We have the magic number of 122 including 118 JD-U legislators, four independents and one LJP legislator," he added.

The independents supporting Nitish Kumar are Pawan Kumar Jaiswal, Som Prakash Singh, Vinay Bihari and Dulal Chandra Goswami.

Bihar JD-U president Bashisht Narain Singh said all its legislators barring Goh representative Ranvijay Singh, who is in prison, attended the legislative party meeting here.

According to JD-U leaders, the Congress with four legislators is likely to abstain during the vote of confidence. The lone CPI legislator is unlikely to vote against Nitish Kumar.

The BJP, with 91 legislators, has stated it was prepared to sit in the opposition.

"The Nitish Kumar government is safe and sure to prove majority in the house with the support of like-minded secular parties," Neeraj Kumar said.

Lalu Prasad has vowed to vote against the JD-U. His RJD has 22 legislators.

"My party will definitely vote against the government during the trust vote," he told the media here.

    • Barasat gang-rape: Protests rock Kolkata after Mamata derides protesters
Barasat gang-rape: Protests rock Kolkata after Mamata derides protesters Kolkata, June 19: People protested on the streets of Kolkata, women government staff took out a march at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's seat of power, while the web users poured scorn on her Tuesday, a day after she shouted back at demonstrators in a village while on a visit to the house of a gangrape-murder victim.

Joining angry women, youths, rights organisations and college and school students, who held rallies and processions, leading lights of the civil society including Magsaysay award winner Mahasweta Devi and celebrated film maker Mrinal Sen urged the masses to take part in a proposed march June 21 demanding justice for the Barasat victim and against crimes against women.

Banerjee had Monday gone unannounced to North 24 Parganas district's Kamduni village, the residence of a second-year college student abducted, gang-raped and killed by a group of youths June 7 when she was returning home after appearing in an examination.

However, the visit turned sour after a group of women asked her to talk to them and shouted slogans about the lack of security.

The chief minister lost her cool and screamed at the villagers "shut up". She also branded the perpetrators of the crime as well as the protesters as "CPI-M people".

In a rare happening at the over two-century-old state secretariat, the Writers' Buildings, housing the chief minister's office, women employees Tuesday marched down its corridors in silence, holding aloft placards that cried "We want justice" and "Shame".

Activists representing Maitree, a network of women's rights organisations and activists, took out a rally from the city hub Metro Channel to the Academy of Fine Arts where a large number of college students took part.

The Democratic Youth Federation of India, the youth arm of the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), also organised a protest procession from Sealdah to Esplanade.

At Kamduni, school children took out a protest-march amid rains displaying placards decrying Banerjee's "brief" visit" to the village, and raised slogans demanding speedy trial and criticising police's "inability" to give protection to the villagers.

In a joint and hard-hitting letter, noted actors, social activists, filmmakers and authors urged the people to condemn the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, irrespective of their political affiliations.

"Not only the administration, but we (the common people) also have to strongly protest against what is happening in the state," said the letter signed among others by Mrinal Sen, Mahasweta Devi, thespian Soumitra Chatterjee, poet-academic Nabaneeta Dev Sen and poets Sankah Ghosh and Tarun Sanyal.

Assailing Banerjee for asking a resident of Kamduni village to "shut up", angry netizens lashed out at the chief minister and sternly told her to "shut up and do some work".

A Facebook post read: "Mamata Banerjee is most irresponsible and useless chief minister of West Bengal. Why she is always so arrogant she never reply politically, always shouting. Recently she visited Barasat Kamduni Gram How she has re-acted with people, it cannot (be) accepted by any gentleman or gentle women."

State Food and Supplies Minister Jyotipriyo Mallick, however, claimed the "so-called protests" were orchestrated by the CPI-M and the Maoists to discredit the Trinamool Congress government and the chef minister.

"We are not paying any importance to the incident. No one can malign the chief minister in this way".

But the opposition CPI-M ridiculed Banerjee, saying she was now "scared" to enter a village in the state and was only doing it "secretly like thieves".

    • Jab They Met: Sanjay and Maneka Gandhi
Jab They Met: Sanjay and Maneka Gandhi New Delhi: Like any other love saga in the Nehru-Gandhi family, this one too started with love at first sight. Maneka and Sanjay met each other in 1973 at a cocktail party thrown by Manaka’s uncle Major-General Kapur to celebrate the forthcoming marriage of his son Veenu Kapur.

Sanjay was present at the party as he was a school time friend of Veenu. In those days, Sanjay was struggling to establish a career in automobile industry. Maneka was in her teens  and was taking up modeling assignments. She was beautiful and attractive. Her gorgeous looks had won her a beauty contest at the college level and she had modeled for a firm of towel manufacturers, Bombay Dyeing.

It was love at first sight. The meeting turned out to be a memorable one for both of them. They spent the evening talking. The two developed an instant liking and felt connected; they both agreed to meet again.

While describing Sanjay and Maneka’s love affair, Khushwant Singh in his book From Truth Love & a Little Malice writes that Sanjay was a shy man and he did not want to be seen in public. Therefore, he preferred meeting Maneka in her house or invited her to his home.

After a few meetings, Sanjay invited Maneka to lunch with his mother, Indira Gandhi who was then the prime minister of India at that time. Of course, Maneka was anxious to have lunch with the lady who was leading the nation. As reported by a famous journalist, Maneka did not know what to say and it was Mrs. Gandhi who broke the ice and said "since Sanjay has not introduced us, you better tell me what your name is and what you do."

The following year, Sanjay had to undergo a hernia surgery. It was during those days that their love bloomed and reached its peak. After her college, Maneka used to visit Sanjay at the All India Institute of Medical Sciencies and spend her afternoons with him.

Maneka’s mother was not happy with the strengthening bond between Sanjay and her daughter.  She took this alliance as a bad match and sent Maneka to her grandmother’s home in Bhopal. In July, 1974 Maneka returned from Bhopal and in the same month, a formal engagement ceremony took place at the Prime Minister’s residence at 1, Safdarjang Road. Indira Gandhi gave her daughter-in-law a gold set and a Tanchoi saree.

Two months later, the wedding took place.in typical Indian style at family friend Mohammed Yunus’s house, who was a close associate of Indira Gandhi.

Maneka was welcomed by her mother-in-law with all sorts of costly gifts. The list included 21 expensive sarees, two sets of gold jewellery, a lehnga and the most important and costliest of all, a khadi saree which was made by Jawaharlal Nehru while he was in jail.

The couple was blessed with a son, Varun. But an ill-fated day struck the happy married life of Sanjay and Maneka. Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash on June 23, 1980 in Delhi. Like other love stories, this one too had all the ingredients to become a great one but unfortunately it did not have a happy ending.

A year later, Maneka Gandhi left her mother-in-law's official Prime Minister's residence after a family quarrel that took place in the glare of media.

Maneka Gandhi right now serves as a Member parliament from Aonla Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Jiah Khan suicide: Aditya Pancholi threatens legal action against Jiah's mother Mumbai, June 18: Aditya Pancholi is in a rage after the hint that the handwriting in the 6-page letter is different from that of the love letters collected from his son Suraj’s residence. Pancholi  has threatened Jiah's mother Rabia Khan of grave consequences.

Aditya Pancholi said in an interview to a daily newspaper that police will do something and from his side. He has handed the copy of the letters to handwriting analysts. The results are awaited and will take a week's time.

Aditya, after seeing the handwritings, is confident that the suicide note and the love letters are written by two different persons.

For the legal action against Jiah’s mother, the actor said that he will do his par. Moreover, he said, the entire society should take the initiative first and thereafter he will take a call.

Reacting to Aditya's warning, an unperturbed Rabia Khan said that if Aditya wants to sue her she will be waiting for it.

“My daughter did not fear death, she feared love. Now she is no more…nothing matters to me. I don’t care about anything. I am in the jungle and I know the laws of jungle. That’s why I am fearless now,” said Rabia Khan.

Jiah Khan committed suicide on June 3rd by hanging herself in her Juhu Apartment two days after which her mother Rabia Khan handed over the 6-page letter to Mumbai Police. The letter carried allegations against Suraj Pancholi for raping, abusing and torturing.

Following this, the Juhu police  detained Suraj and he is currently in Arthur Road jail  till June 27.

    • Follow these tips to get the best salary
Follow these tips to get the best salary New Delhi: After proving yourself well qualified for a particular job during the interview, you need to ask yourself the tough question: the salary. Salary negotiation is a skill, one that does not come naturally to many job seekers, who are most concerned on impressing the interviewer and often overlook the opportunity to negotiate a better salary once they have been offered the job.

Many people struggle when trying to obtain a salary they deserve and one that accommodates their lifestyle. The reasons behind this because of urgent need of a job, don’t want to loose the company, or don’t want to spend time to research or mull over the offer.

From the employers’ perspective, they want to get this question out in the open for these reasons: 1) They want to know whether you're willing to work at or below the top of their pay scale for a given job, and 2) they ask you to negotiate against yourself. Job hunters are often at a loss (figuratively and literally) trying to both get the job and obtain the highest possible compensation.

To make sure that you walk away with the best possible offer, there are several simple tricks you can employ during the job interview.

      1. Depend on research, not guesswork

For every job you apply to, there is usually a well defined salary range. This means you need to understand how much an employer is willing to pay for to the job that you have applied. Some of the tools used by companies in order to decide what is the good amount to a particular position include:

Average pay at other companies in their industry
Average pay for professionals with your level of experience and education
Average pay for professionals in your field in their area of the country

You can easily calculate the salary by knowing how much your skills are worth and how much similar jobs pay in that particular region. Research sites like Salary.com, Payscale.com, monster.com, shine.com and a host of others to get as much knowledge as possible about how people with similar skills and education, years of experience, and levels of responsibility are compensated nationwide and in your particular geographic area. After knowing the low end of the pay scale and the salary you are aiming for, you can determine the right amount that will not seem unreasonable to the recruiter.

      2. Be responsive, but don't commit early on

There’s an old saying “The first person to bring up money, loses.” Going into salary discussions early in a discussion indicates that you place high priority on rupee rather than being a good fit for a company’s culture. But if in case the recruiter suddenly brings the salary related question then it is always better to change the subject to showcase your entire personality.

Probably you can say: "I'm sure that if I am a great fit, we will each work to treat each other fairly when it comes to determining a specific salary for this job, right?"

      3. Tackle “This is what we can afford right now” deftly

In case an employer really wants to hire you but has limited resources, he/she may come with the excuse “This is what we can afford right now”. If you are in a dire straight to get the job then you can ask, “Is there performance based bonus?” You could say “Let’s talk about specific, measurable results that would improve your bottom line and increase my earnings.” Get any incentive pay agreements in writing during the hiring stage so your employer is committed to following through.

      4. Justify your request

You negotiation skills carry lots of weight while deciding the right amount of salary for a job. If you think you are the best possible candidate for a particular job then you can back up your demand by talking the whole world of possible things that you can do once you are on board. Some of these include: how you can add to the company’s bottom line, what efforts have you done for your previous employer, what additional responsibilities you can take, and how your hiring will be an overall benefit for the company.

      5. Be brutally honest with yourself

It is of extreme importance that you first evaluate your own qualifications. If you are more than 50 per cent sure that you deserve that extra mount of money, then you should go ahead and ask, but if you are less than 50 percent sure, err on the side of not pushing for a higher salary and instead prove yourself once in the job.
