ABC can’t stop gushing about ‘Roseanne,’ ‘American Idol’

What’s old is new again — well at least if you’re an ABC TV programming executive. On Tuesday, ABC touted the success of reboots of “Roseanne” and “American Idol” — to go with the rest of its programming slate. “Roseanne,” a late-1980s hit about a working-class family, has averaged more than 19 million viewers in its rebooted form. “The last time we had the No. 1 show was 24 years ago,” said Ben Sherwood, president of Disney/ABC Television Group at the company’s Upfront presentation at Lincoln Center in New York. “If anyone came to play a drinking game for how many times we mention ‘Roseanne,’ you’re welcome.” The network also plans to air three hour-long dramas created or produced by Shonda Rhimes ...
